My stash of Mary Stewart novels was mostly destroyed by water that had seeped into our basement through some cracks in the foundation. Almost everything I store there is in plastic tubs on shelves. But I had just discovered a cardboard box of books hidden behind some tubs I hadn't looked at for a long time. I was delighted to find them but made the mistake of setting the box on the floor in front of my bookcases. The water came in while we were away and when I saw the box of sodden books I was heartbroken because hardly any could be salvaged. I was only able to save four of my Mary Stewart books. When I found that many of her suspense novels had been reprinted I ordered all of my favorites that had been lost. Some were used books like this one but it's condition was like new.

I first started reading Mary Stewart after seeing the movie starring Hailey Mills in "The Moonspinners". I enjoyed the movie but once I read the book it was loosely based on I realized that the novel was so well written and far more suspenseful than the movie. I was hooked and bought and read every Mary Stewart novel ever written. I don't know why she changed from writing her wonderful suspense novels to the boring "Merlin" series but I wish she had kept writing her wonderful suspense novels like "Wildfire at Midnight". This was written early in her career and even though it's setting is shortly after WWII it doesn't seem dated because the dates are given at the beginning of the preface and the beginning chapter of the main novel so you know what time period it's set in and the characters and their actions and everything else is perfect for that time in history. I hadn't read this novel in many years and I had forgotten the plot completely so it was like reading it for the first time. It's one of her first novels so it's not as well known as her later ones but it's still one of her best. Since I couldn't remember the plot I was unable to figure out who the murderer was until he was revealed in the end. That's one of the best things about reading a Mary Stewart novel for the first time----she leaves plenty of clues but they're subtle and even though I can usually guess who the villain is in most suspense novels I read I was never really sure who it was in my first reading of any Mary Stewart novel. I remember the plots of almost all her other books but was delighted to find that this one had slipped from my memory and I was as surprised by who the villain was just as the heroine was shocked by his identity at the end of the novel.

I'm having a wonderful time reading all my old favorites by Mary Stewart but I remember the who done it in all the rest of her suspense novels so I'm reading those because she was such a great writer whose descriptions of places I've never been to and will probably never get to visit are truly worth reading. Many novelists write pages and pages of scenery that really has nothing to do with the plot and I confess that I can skip most of it because it's just filler material. But in Stewart's novels the scenery is a vital part of the plot and it's so well written that I never skip any of it. It sets the atmosphere for the story and often contains clues that are vital to the story. I'm not going to describe the novel because it you've never read it any description I write might spoil the surprise and I certainly don't want to do that. I'm still as much of a fan of Mary Stewart's suspense novels (with some romance always there but only secondary to the suspense) as I was when I first read them years ago and although I read them over and over years ago reading them again after so many years reminded me of just how good they were and still are. If it's sex filled romantic suspense you want to read you won't find any sex scenes. But if you enjoy romantic suspense that's written by one of the early masters who wrote some of the earliest and most influential books in this genre then read Mary Stewart and you'll see why she was the best selling author of romantic suspense in her lifetime and her novels of suspense are being reprinted. You won't miss the sex scenes at all. But you will be tempted to read any of her books in one sitting. They're that good.

The news a few weeks ago that Mary Stewart had passed away at the age of 94 got me into rereading her classic romantic suspense books written mostly in the late 50s, the 60s and 70s. Stewart's Nine Coaches Waiting (Rediscovered Classics) and all of Georgette Heyer's work were what set me, as a young teen, onto a lifetime of romance reading.

This particular book of Stewart's from 1956 is one I had never read and is an enjoyable mystery set in the Scottish Hebrides. Young divorcee Gianetta goes to the Isle of Skye for some rest and relaxation from the stresses of her life only to discover her ex-husband staying at the same hotel. Not only that, there's a creepy murderer out and about, and just about everyone at the hotel, with the exception of Gianetta, is a possible suspect.

This is short but very well written. Once thing I've noticed in my rereads of Mary Stewart books is all the cigarette smoking going on all the time, and some of the social mores are a bit out of date, but it's a fun look back at a different time. Not only that, but there's always a good mystery, excellent description of exotic locales, and a low-key romance to be found in her books.
It's been a long time since I re-read any of Mary Stewart's books so, based upon a friend's recommendation of this one (and one that I don't recall reading before), I started Wildfire at Midnight. Fantastic! I had such a good time immersed in this story ... or, maybe not a "good" time considering it's a murder mystery, but it was thoroughly engrossing. ) I liked the narrative, the characters, and the setting (spectacular) although ...

I admit I was a tiny bit annoyed about who the protagonist ended up with.
Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books.

On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for and in a rash moment, purchased them all.

I devoured Wildfire at Midnight and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. I particularly love the priest of the church with a statue of every single saint. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid and I feel as if I could navigate the Cuillin mountains based solely on her descriptions of the geography.
